Attention: Spoilers Ahead for Episode 2 of The Walking Dead: Dead City The Walking Dead Season 11: Dead City provides insight into an unusual subplot from Season 11 regarding Ezekiel’s (Khary Payton) feelings towards reformed Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

The conclusion of the original series has resulted in numerous spin-off shows, including Walking Dead favorites such as Daryl, Michonne, and Maggie (Lauren Cohan), who embark on new post-apocalyptic adventures.

In Maggie’s case, The Walking Dead: Dead City teams her up with the man she despises the most: Negan. The unlikely duo must travel to New York to rescue Maggie’s son Hershel (Logan Kim) from The Croat (Željko Ivanek), a new villain who is also a former protégé of Negan during The Saviors era.

Episode 2 of Dead City, “Who’s There?,” sheds light on Negan’s history with The Croat, potentially uncovering why King Ezekiel of The Kingdom could never forgive his former enemy.

In The Walking Dead: Dead City’s second episode, Negan and Maggie are detained by a new group of survivors. During their downtime, Maggie inquires about The Croat, prompting Negan to recount the time when he took him into The Saviors fold after he survived “the worst s**t imaginable”.

The Croat’s talent for violence led him to become a torturer for the group, and Negan recalls a time when they discovered a Kingdom scout, and despite his orders to let her go, The Croat tortured her mercilessly.

Warning: spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead: Dead City episode 2 The Walking Dead: Dead City helps make sense of one odd subplot from season 11 regarding how Ezekiel (Khary Payton) felt about the reformed Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

In Maggie’s case, The Walking Dead: Dead City pairs her with the man she hates the most: Negan. The duo is forced to head to New York to save Maggie’s son Hershel (Logan Kim) from new villain The Croat (Željko Ivanek), who is also a former protege of Negan from The Saviors era.

Dead City episode 2 “Who’s There?” fills in some of Negan’s history with The Croat, which might also reveal the true reason The Kingdom’s King Ezekiel could never forgive his former foe.

The Walking Dead: Dead City’s second episode features a scene where Negan and Maggie are locked up by a new group of survivors. Since they have some downtime, Maggie asks for more information on The Croat, with Negan explaining he took him into The Saviors after he survived “the worst s**t imaginable.”

The Croat’s talent for violence saw him become a torturer for the group, and Negan recounts a time when they discovered a girl who acted as a scout for The Kingdom, and while he ordered The Croat to let her go, she was tortured regardless.

Whatever happened to this girl was apparently so horrific Negan can even bring himself to explain it, and in the aftermath, he tried to kill The Croat; the villain escaped with an ear blown off instead.

While Negan could never be fully forgiven for his past deeds, by Walking Dead season 11, most of the survivors had learned to somewhat accept him as reformed. However, Ezekiel could never do that, and in season 11, explained on more than one occasion how the killing, torture and enslavement of women by Negan meant they’d never be friends, and Dead City’s Croat origin only underlines the reasons for his intense resentment.

Negan’s Dead City speech also fills in some backstory gaps in the original show’s history. Not much is known about the extent of the conflict between The Kingdom and The Saviors’ Sanctuary before the arrival of Rick and his group onto the scene. Even though Walking Dead: Dead City is trying to walk back some of Negan’s viciousness, incidents such as The Croat’s torturing of an innocent Kingdom scout highlight how brutal the conflict was.
