This Movie Made Chris Pine Famous

Chris Pine has had a remarkable career in the entertainment industry. He was born in Los Angeles in 1980 to actor parents, Robert Pine and Gwynne Ford, and after completing his studies at the University of California Berkeley in 2002, he pursued a career in theater acting and never looked back. Pine has showcased his versatility as an actor by taking on a wide range of characters in dramas, sci-fi, horrors, comedies, and everything in between. With a long list of films and plays under his belt, it can be challenging to pinpoint his breakout role. Some argue it was his first episode in the hit TV series IS, while others believe it was his portrayal of James T. Kirk in the 2009 remake of Star Trek.

Today, Pine is a well-known name in the film industry, with his recent projects like Wonder Woman and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves putting him in the spotlight. However, it was his role as Lord Devereaux in the 2004 film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement that initially launched his career. The classic enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy was a hit among millennials, with Pine’s charming portrayal of Nicholas Devereaux stealing the show. He brought a lovable and cheeky energy to the character, making him more than just a pretty face. Moreover, Pine’s portrayal of Nicholas Devereaux shows his evolution as a character, which is a staple of the romance trope and often overlooked in romantic films.

Four years after The Princess Diaries, Pine played the iconic role of James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ retelling of Star Trek. The adaptation was a trailblazer for its time, setting up new computer technology and stunning visual effects that bring outer space to life on screen. Pine brought a fresh newness to the role of Kirk, adding more modesty, seriousness, and contemplation to the character while staying true to his biggest personality traits of bravery, calmness in danger, and wit. The film was a hit among audiences, and Pine’s performance was widely appreciated.

Despite the stark differences between The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement and Star Trek, Pine links these two projects together by one quality: his ability to take on big-budget films as a newbie actor. Both projects felt the pressure to be good enough for audiences, yet they took a chance and hired an actor without many projects under his belt, and the payoff was huge. Pine has continued this trademark throughout his career by taking on billion-dollar projects like the Star Trek trilogy and smaller indie films like Unstoppable, This Means War, and Z for Zachariah.

In conclusion, Chris Pine is a versatile actor who has established himself as a prominent figure in the film industry. He has portrayed a wide range of characters in various genres and has proven his ability to take on big-budget projects and indie films alike. From his breakout role in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement to his iconic portrayal of James T. Kirk in Star Trek, Pine has shown his acting chops and projected his career forward with each project.

Chris Pine has had an incredibly successful career. Born in 1980 in Los Angeles, Pine grew up with actor parents Robert Pin and Gwynne Ford. After attending the University of California Berkeley in 2002, he began doing theater acting and everything went domino-ing from there.

From dramas to sci-fis, horrors, comedies, and everything in between, Pine has had a wide range of characters he’s played and projects he’s been a part of. With such a long list of films and plays, it can be hard to remember what exactly was Pine’s breakout role. Was it his first episode in the hit TV series IS? Or perhaps his amazing role as James T. Kirk in the 2009 remake of Star Trek? Chris Pine’s current projects have certainly put him in the spotlight, huge blockbusters such as Wonder Woman and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves are what audiences now know him for. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

In 2004, the world was introduced to Lord Devereaux in Garry Marshall’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Following our princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) as she completes her responsibilities as royalty. A part of said list of responsibilities? Getting married for the good of her country Genovia. As an independent woman, and as someone raised outside the royal family, Mia is more than hesitant about having to find someone to get married to and start a life with. She’s a 21st-century lady! Surely she’s strong enough to rule her country on her own. Nonetheless, with the help of her grandmother (Julie Andrews) she goes through a series of trials and tribulations to find the man she can call her husband.

Lord Nicholas Devereaux comes into Mia’s life like a slap in the face. Sure, he’s a good-looking man, but his arrogant personality, chauvinist tendencies, and general disregard for Mia and women at large mean that, from the beginning, our Princess of Genovia can’t stand him. On top of that, Nicholas has his own ulterior motives. After learning that Mia must marry, he makes it his mission to do anything possible to get her to fall in love with him, so he can gain power and money.

The two are set against each other like cats and dogs. And yet, as time continues and Mia continues to put herself in situations where she can meet a man — royal events, sleepovers, and balls that look like tons of fun to the audience–– she also finds herself spending more and more time with the Lord. After many chaotic sequences, and accidentally falling into the pool, Mia realizes that she’s falling hard for the man she once couldn’t stand.

Why Princess Diaries Set Off Chris Pine’s Acting Career

A classic enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy, The Princess Diaries 2 was a hallmark movie for millennials everywhere. Aside from Anne Hathaway’s performance and her life thrust into the world of royalty, there’s another big element that made audiences fall in love with the movie: Nicholas Devereaux. Chris Pine’s first big film, he charms the pants off of Mia and the viewer at the same time. And while we could say that girls were excited about the film because of Pine’s blue eyes and a nice smile, that would be a vast oversimplification. Pine brings a lovable and cheeky energy to his character as Nick, making him more than just a pretty face.

More than this, Pine does an amazing job of evolving his character through the movie, demonstrating how he matures as his relationship with Mia deepens. He goes from a self-centered charmer to someone authentic, caring deeply about Mia and ready to risk it all to show that he actually loves her. While this is a staple of the trope in romance, it’s also true that, more often than not, many romantic films fall flat because they can’t seem to get this element right. And yet, his first big feature film, Pine gets it right out of the gate. So much so that, by the end of the movie when Nicholas comes and professes his love on a bent knee, we can’t help but swoon.

With a performance like this, Chris Pine proved his acting chops, ultimately projecting his career forward. And while Pine’s first project was a romance, he was never pigeonholed into just this type of role. After The Princess Diaries 2Pine made a huge pivot into a very different type of film.

Star Trek and Another Big Project

Four years after The Princess DiariesJ.J. Abrams came out with a new retelling of the hit series Star Trek. Following the USS Enterprise, James T Kirk and Spock must combat Nero, a Romulan from their future who threatens the state of the United Federation of Planets. This adaptation had a lot at stake. With such a big fan base, an already well-established TV series, and a plethora of comic books, producers and creatives had to make sure their movie version of Star Trek was a hit. Maybe that’s why, when casting for the role of James T. Kirk, casting directors had to pick Chris Pine; he already proved that he can join a big project and deliver on his performance.

And deliver he does. After all, the world had years to fall in love with William Shatner’s Kirk and Leonard Nimoy’s Spock, so producers couldn’t be totally sure they’d respond well to brand-new versions of the beloved character. When the film finally came out, audiences were very excited to see Kirk and Spock, the dynamic duo, reintroduced into the world in a new setting and played by new actors. It seems that Chris Pine once again amazed audiences with his performance. Chris Pine brought a fresh newness to the role of Kirk. While the character stays true to many of his biggest personality traits — brave, calm in the face of danger, and witty — Pine also adds new elements. A pit more modesty, an edge of seriousness and quiet contemplation that William Shatner’s Kirk didn’t have as much.

Chris Pine’s Two Big Break-Out Roles

From their synopsis, The Princess Diaries 2 and Star Trek don’t have a lot in common. A sci-fi that explores alien relationships and intergalactic war, and a film about a coming-of-age queen looking for a husband, these flicks don’t cater to the same audiences either. And yet, Chris Pine links these two projects together by one very important quality: He was a newbie actor who delivered two very high-budget films.

A sequel to an already beloved movie, and a re-telling of a story with a global fan base, both projects felt the pressure to be good enough for audiences. It would make sense to go with a more seasoned veteran of the film industry — an actor who had enough experience that he’d be a bit more sure to land the performances. Instead, both projects took a chance and hired an actor without many projects under his belt, and the payoff was huge.

Chris Pine’s performances not only show off his versatility as an actor, but his ability to take on projects big, a trademark he has continued in his career up until today. After finishing the first Star Trek film, Pine went on to create two more movies to make a trilogy over six years.

And yet, Pine hasn’t just worked on billion-dollar projects, he’s also connected with smaller indie films. Playing various characters in smaller projects like Unstoppable, This Means Warand Z for ZachariahPine continues to show he can take on a diverse set of roles. In 2022, he played an evil cult leader in Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darlingthey immediately went on to star in the highly anticipated 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Chris Pine’s first two films certainly set him up for success. And while audiences will always look fondly at Star Trek and The Princess Diaries 2it’s also true that, as Pine continues to make new movies, what he is remembered for changes too. It’s more than likely that, if you ask several people on the street how they know the glamorous actor, you’ll get a dozen different answers. From Star Trek to Jack Ryan, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verseto Wonder WomanChris Pine continues to involve himself in interesting and unique projects.
