Tom Holland was ‘obsessed’ with drinking before sobriety journey

Tom Holland shared his experience of realizing his addiction to alcohol when he attempted to abstain from drinking for a month.

In an episode of Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast released on Sunday, Holland recalled, “All I could think about was having a drink. That’s all I could think about.”

Holland initially decided to participate in “dry January” in January 2022, a popular trend where individuals commit to not consuming alcohol for a month after a period of heavy drinking during the holiday season.

However, the 27-year-old star of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” quickly realized that something more significant was at play when he stopped drinking.

“I would wake up thinking about it. I would constantly check the clock… And it really frightened me,” shared the British actor.

After taking a month off, the “Cherry” actor noticed that alcohol was the only thing on his mind.

“Maybe I have a slight issue with alcohol. So I decided to punish myself and extended my abstinence to February as well. I stayed off alcohol for two months,” said Holland.

Holland, who is currently in a relationship with Zendaya, star of “Euphoria,” admitted to struggling during the two-month period without alcohol. This made him question whether he had a problem with alcohol.

It was then that the actor committed to six months of sobriety, planning to stay alcohol-free until his birthday on June 1.

After six months of sobriety, he realized how much healthier and fitter he felt.

As the date approached, Holland noticed a positive transformation in his life after six months without alcohol.

“I started sleeping better. I became better at handling problems, even situations on set that would typically upset me. I experienced improved mental clarity, and I felt healthier and fitter,” recalled Holland.

“I asked myself, ‘Why am I so enslaved by this drink? Why am I so fixated on the idea of having a drink?'”

Holland revealed that this was not his first attempt at quitting alcohol, admitting that he had gone back to drinking a few times in the past.

However, he emphasized that this time was different.

“I put in the effort to change my mindset. I genuinely questioned myself, ‘Why do you drink? Why are you drinking?’ And often, my answer would be to feel more comfortable in social settings,” Holland shared.

Presently, Holland has been sober from alcohol for a year and a half, and he is thrilled about his achievement.

However, while the “Cherry” actor has found solace in abstaining from alcohol, he doesn’t impose his lifestyle choice on others.

“If I can encourage someone to drink less, that would be great. But I don’t want to start dictating that everyone should stop drinking. It’s not my place to say,” Holland stated.

Holland is currently taking a break from acting after filming “The Crowded Room.”

Tom Holland detailed how he realized he was “definitely addicted to alcohol” when trying to commit to a month of no drinking.

“All I could think about was having a drink. That’s all I could think about,” Holland recalled on an episode of Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast released Sunday.

Holland originally ditched the bottle in January 2022 to participate in the ever-popular “dry January” — a trend in which people commit to no alcohol for a month typically following a booze-heavy holiday season.

However, the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” star, 27, quickly recognized that there was more going on when he stopped drinking.

“I was waking up thinking about it. I was checking the clock … And it just really scared me,” the British actor shared.

“Maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing. So I sort of decided to punish myself and say, I’ll do February as well. I’ll do two months off.”

Holland, who is dating “Euphoria” star Zendaya, said he was “really struggling” after going dry for two months, which led him to fear that he may have “an alcohol problem.”

It was then that the actor decided to go six months without a drink and hold out until his birthday on June 1.

When the date finally approached, however, he recognized a positive shift in his life after half a year without alcohol.

Today, Holland is “a year and a half” sober from alcohol, which he’s “over the moon” about.

And while the “Cherry” star has found solace in saying no to booze, he’s not trying to push his lifestyle choice onto others.

“If I could encourage someone to drink less, that would be great. But I don’t want to start getting into the world of, ‘You need to stop drinking.’ Because it’s not for me to say.”

Holland is currently on an acting hiatus after filming “The Crowded Room.”
