A new sneak peek has been unveiled for Wallace and Gromit in the Grand Getaway, a virtual reality game featuring the beloved animated duo. The game will have its world premiere at the Future Games Show Summer showcase, as reported by GamesRadar. The sneak peek trailer reveals Wallace on an alien planet emerging from a spacecraft that will look familiar to fans of the duo’s first adventure, 1989’s A Grand Day Out.

The Wallace and Gromit franchise has inspired numerous video game adaptations, dating back to the mid-1990s when a handful of computer games were released. They were later given their more well-known console games, Project Zoo and The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in 2003 and 2005, respectively. Wallace and Gromit also had their own episode video game series, dubbed Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Adventures in 2009. In 2021, a mobile game, Wallace and Gromit: The Big Fix Up, was released.

However, Wallace and Gromit in the Great Getaway is the franchise’s first foray into virtual reality. The transition into this new medium should go smoothly since Ben Whitehead will reprise his role as the voice of Wallace; we can hear that familiar voice in the sneak peek above. Whitehead has voiced Wallace in several projects since 2005 and took over the role for all projects when the original actor, Peter Sallis, who passed away in 2017, retired from the role in 2010.

“We are thrilled to announce that Ben Whitehead will play Wallace in the upcoming VR adventure The Grand Getaway as well as in future projects,” Aardman stated last year. “We were touched to see from the many comments shared about the film that Peter Sallis, the original voice of Wallace, holds a very special place in your hearts; we’re happy that Ben will uphold Peter’s wonderful legacy by bringing Wallace’s unique charm to an exciting new chapter for the duo.”

It was also confirmed in January that a new Wallace and Gromit movie is in the works. The movie, in development at Netflix, will serve as the first film from the duo since 2008’s A Matter of Loaf and Death. Along with this film and the VR game, other projects with the Wallace and Gromit franchise are planned, all coinciding with this year’s 30th anniversary of their first movie, The Wrong Trousers.

“It’s very exciting to have some brand-new Wallace and Gromit stories in the works as we celebrate the anniversary of such an important moment in the characters’ history,” creator Nick Park said in a statement about the new material that’s soon to come. “The Wrong Trousers was a special film for all of us at Aardman. It’s wonderful that it continues to find new fans today, and that we can bring those fans more adventures – and more inventions, more mishaps, and more problems for Gromit to solve.”

Wallace and Gromit in the Grand Getaway will be released later this year exclusively for Meta brand VR headsets. The upcoming movie will release on Netflix in 2024.
