Screen Rant had the pleasure of chatting with Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly immediately after the world premiere of Jack Ryan season 4 in Boston. We discuss how Jack Ryan formed a team with Jim Greer and Mike November, how season 4 shows a new side of Greer, and the secret to Kelly playing the fun-loving Mike November.

Wendell Pierce & Michael Kelly on Being a Team and Saving Jack Ryan’s Life

Jack Ryan Greer

Screen Rant: One of the things I love about your version of Jack Ryan is that you guys are a team. Jack doesn’t really have a team in the movies in the books. And let’s be honest, without you guys, he’d be dead.

Michael Kelly: (laughs) Literally, yes, yes, he would. Yeah, it’s the coolest thing. It’s the most, for me, rewarding thing about the show is [to] work with these two incredible actors, to get to go to work and do that and laugh every day. But know you’re doing great content, it’s special, man. It’s really rewarding.

Wendell Pierce: Yeah, and it just shows you [how] great the rapport that you have [is]. And that actually is reflected in the work that they do at the agency, at the CIA. You rely on each other’s expertise. And that really is what builds the team.

Wendell, I love how your version of Jim Greer gave the character so many dimensions. It’s even cooler that we see him interact with his family. Can you talk a little bit about that? We never saw James Earl Jones’ family.

Wendell Pierce: Yeah, and that was the thing that was clear in the research that we did. So many of the officers that I met talked about the hardship that it puts on the families. Just like a military family has a hardship, imagine being in Intelligence where people have to make sure that your cover isn’t blown, what you’re doing isn’t exposed [to] put you in danger.

And then also, just what you need to keep a family together, how the strains that the work can put on it. And I wanted to explore that. And I shared that with John. And he said, “Yeah, we will fold that into the story as we go along.” So that’s the best thing about doing a series. You can see all those different aspects of the character. And then the origin story like this series was, it opens up the character of James Greer even more, and so, I really was appreciative of that.

Jack Ryan Mike November

Michael, the thing I love most about Mike November is that you always like you’re having the most fun. What is the key to having fun, even when you’re being shot at by terrorists?

Michael Kelly: You know, and I’m gonna be honest, I have a lot of fun. Michael Kelly has a lot of fun. I don’t mean to say me in [the] third person, I just meant to distinguish between Mike November and myself. I have a lot of fun in life. And I think that we collectively made this decision that you saw Mike November’s transformation from the beginning of season two to the end of season two. He becomes a different person. These two men enable him to become the person that was probably always inside of him. And I think, in my opinion, they brought the better side of him out. And then, you see it grow over the third season and then into the fourth.

A lot of that has to do with John, and John’s just insane sense of humor. So many of those fun one-liners and things that I do are John on the spot just being like, “Yo, dude, say this, do that,” you know? And it gave me a certain sense of freedom as an actor to act on my own impulses and do my own little things. To watch him grow over the years. I gotta tell you, man, it was just such a treat to play such a fun character. Especially after playing such serious characters for so long. It was really nice to be able to be like, oh my god, have an audience member be like, “He does have teeth!” (laughs) I smiled once on six years of House of Cards. One time.

I think I remember that smile.

Michael Kelly: (laughs) It’s pretty wild to be able to just do it whenever the hell I want on Jack Ryan.

That’s amazing. Listen, I wish I had an hour to talk to you guys about Jack Ryan. Again, I love the season. I love your work. I hope maybe you guys come back for season 5 or a Rainbow Six spin-off.

Michael Kelly: Me too, buddy. Your lips to God’s ears. Thank you.

Wendell Pierce: Good point. Thank you so much, John.
