Why This K-Drama Is More Than Just an Action Spectacle

Korean dramas are highly anticipated even before their premiere due to their basis on popular webtoons. Webtoons are visual stories that resemble comics, but generally consist of a single panel in each frame. The TV industry was eagerly awaiting the release of dramas like All of Us Are Dead, The Uncanny Counter, and True Beauty, which were expected to be successful. Another example is Weak Hero Class 1, an action drama based on a popular webtoon of the same name. The plot centers on Yeon Si Eun (Park Ji Hoon), a model student who excels academically but is physically frail. Despite being outmatched physically, he fights arrogant bullies with all the wits he can muster.

The drama’s action sequences were a major selling point, but it offers much more than that. Weak Hero Class 1 begins with prevalent themes such as bullying and students pushing themselves to achieve good grades to attend Seoul University. Although Si Eun initially comes across as a loner, his interactions with Soo Ho (Choi Hyun Wook) gradually change him, opening his mind to the world outside. Due to his parents’ divorce and constant arguing, he started distancing himself from everyone, but he believes his new life is not as terrible. However, the drama not only brings a smile to your face but also a tinge of sadness as you progress through the plot, making you feel what the characters feel.

While there is plenty of action in between the scenes of despondency, with Soo Ho being incredible in close combat and Si Eun using his mind to take advantage of everything around him to put up a fight, the drama focuses on their friendship and how they find comfort in each other’s sorrows. Weak Hero Class 1 realistically portrays the basis of bullying, how parents treat their children for the sake of social respect, and how they fail to see their children’s pain, venting their rage on victims.

The drama is considerably different from the webtoon, with Si Eun confronting bullies like it’s nothing. The webcomic begins with Si Eun starting at a new high school notorious for bullies’ dread, while the drama didn’t get to that until the very end, suggesting that they were content to merely explore Si Eun’s past before moving on to the main action in Season 2. So, Weak Hero Class 1 gives you every reason to watch it, and action is only a small part of what it has to offer in the long run, as there will be much more to flesh out on the story in the future.

Weak Hero Class 1 was released in November 2022, with eight episodes, and shortly after its premiere, they announced a second season for the series, which is yet to be released. Meanwhile, if you can’t wait for the second season after seeing the first, you can read the webtoon, which is equally incredible.

Weak Hero Class 1 begins with extremely prevalent themes such as bullying and students pushing themselves to achieve good grades in order to join Seoul University. Every high school K-drama has explored the subject, but Weak Hero Class 1 adds something fresh to the mix. Although Si Eun initially comes across as a loner who does not want to interfere with anyone and is unwilling to be bothered, his interactions with Soo Ho (Choi Hyun Wook) gradually change him, opening his mind to the outside world.

Due to his parent’s divorce and constant arguing over his career, he started keeping everyone out, but he believes his new life isn’t as horrible. However, the drama not only brings a smile to your face but also a tinge of sadness as you progress through the plot. It makes you feel what the characters feel, and you’ll just want it to conclude on a pleasant note at some point.

While there is plenty of action in between the scenes of despondency, with Soo Ho being incredible in close combat and Si Eun using his mind to take advantage of everything around him to put up a fight, the drama focuses on their friendship and how they come to find comfort in each other’s sorrows.

The Realistic Portrayal of Bullying

While many people believe that bullying in South Korea is not as awful as it is portrayed on television, a minority think it is just as serious. Apparently, South Korea has legislation that states that typical offenses committed by teenagers under the age of eighteen are not punishable by time in prison but instead allow them to walk free as if they had done nothing wrong.

A great deal of Weak Hero Class 1‘s story revolves around the basis that sets things in motion, with Si Eun getting entangled in the midst of bullies and Soo Ho helping him. While most dramas fail to explain why these people become bullies, Weak Hero Class 1 does not. It demonstrates how their parents treat them for the sake of social respect while failing to see their children’s pain and venting their rage on victims, although they are also victims in certain respects.

Some of the drama’s depictions of regular life in South Korea are accurate, despite a sense of exaggeration, such as using baseball bats to break bones, being involved with a gangster, and fighting to the death. Even if you started watching Weak Hero Class 1 for the action, which many people find appealing after reading a significant portion of the webtoon, it has a lot more to offer.

The First Season Is Merely a Prelude

Viewers of the show frequently believe that the protagonist lacks fighting ability, and they wait until the end just to be disappointed that he cannot fight like Soo Ho. However, that is the purpose of the entire series, and it is one of the reasons he is referred to as a weak hero. The drama appears to be considerably different from the webtoonin which Si Eun confronts bullies like it’s nothing.

While the webcomic kicked off with Si Eun starting at a new high school notorious for bullies’ dread, the drama didn’t get to that until the very end, suggesting that they were content to merely explore Si Eun’s past before moving on to the main action in Season 2. Besides So Hoo and Oh Beom Seok (Hong Kyung), you probably won’t recognize anyone else from the webtoon in the drama. So, in a sense, Weak Hero Class 1 gives you every reason to watch it, and action is only a small portion of what it has to offer in the long run, as there will be much more to flesh out on the story in the future.

Weak Hero Class 1 was released in November 2022, with eight episodes, and shortly after its premiere, they announced a second season for the series, which is yet to be released.
