Winter’s War Cast & Fairytale Character Guide

In 2020, The Huntsman: Winter’s War was released, four years after Snow White and the Huntsman. This film continued to reimagine the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, boasting an even larger cast. While the first movie focused on Snow White and the huntsman Eric’s mission to defeat the evil queen Ravenna, The Huntsman: Winter’s War delves into Eric’s origins in another queen’s army and his forbidden love affair with a fellow warrior. Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who served as the visual effects supervisor for the first movie, and written by Craig Mazin, known for his work on The Last of Us and Chernobyl, this ambitious fairy tale epic takes place both before and after the battle against Ravenna. Despite the absence of Kirsten Stewart as Snow White, the film sees the return of Chris Hemsworth as Eric and Charlize Theron as the formidable Queen Ravenna. However, the star-studded cast doesn’t end there, as the movie also features Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt. Despite receiving mixed reviews and performing poorly at the box office, The Huntsman: Winter’s War was redeemed by its visually stunning elements, Halsey’s original song “Castle,” and the impressive acting performances, earning it six Teen Choice Awards nominations. The cast of characters in The Huntsman: Winter’s War includes Chris Hemsworth as Eric, who was once a loyal member of the Ice Queen Freya’s army before he rebelled against her evil nature. Charlize Theron portrays Queen Ravenna, the resurrected sorceress who embodies the charmingly deceitful nature of the villain. Emily Blunt takes on the role of Queen Freya, Ravenna’s sister, who inflicts punishment by subjecting people to a frozen state. Jessica Chastain plays Sara, Eric’s wife and a fellow warrior who demonstrates courage in battle. Nick Frost portrays Nion, one of the seven dwarfs who provides strategic expertise and strength in combat. Sam Claflin reprises his role as King William, the respected monarch of Tabor who is romantically involved with Snow White. The supporting cast includes Rob Brydon as Gryff, Sheridan Smith as Bromwyn, Alexandra Roach as Doreena, Sope Dirisu as Tull, Sophie Cookson as Pippa, Sam Hazeldine as Liefr, Colin Morgan as Andrew, Liam Neeson as the narrator, and Robert Portal as the King. Each actor brings their own talent and flair to their respective roles, adding depth and complexity to the characters in this fantasy action-adventure film.

Released four years after Snow White and the Huntsman2016’s The Huntsman: Winter’s War continued reinterpreting the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm with an even bigger cast. While the first movie revolved around Snow White and the huntsman Eric’s efforts at defeating the evil queen Ravenna, The Huntsman: Winter’s War takes place both before and after this battle. This time around, Eric’s origins in another Queen’s army along with his forbidden romance with a fellow warrior are also touched upon. The ambitious fairy tale epic was directed by the first movie’s visual effects supervisor Cedric Nicolas-Troyan and written by The Last of Us and Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin.

While Kirsten Stewart didn’t return as Snow White, The Huntsman: Winter’s War found Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Eric and Charlize Theron returning as the vicious monarch standing in Eric’s way. But these two aren’t the only Hollywood A-listers in the movie as it also goes on to feature the likes of Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt. Despite its star-studded ensemble, The Huntsman: Winter’s War unfortunately received mixed reviews and bombed at the box office. Still, it was the visual elements, Halsey’s original song “Castle” and ultimately the acting performances that redeemed the fantasy action-adventure movie and earned it six Teen Choice Awards nominations along the way. Here’s the cast of characters in The Huntsman: Winter’s War.

Chris Hemsworth As Eric

Before he became the so-called Huntsman, Eric was a loyal and valiant member of the army of the Ice Queen Freya. However, he decides to go against the Queen when he witnesses her evil nature. The character’s personality stems directly from the original Huntsman in the Grimm Brothers’ Snow White in which he intentionally spares the titular heroine’s life violating the royal orders that he received. Leading The Huntsman: Winter’s War cast, Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to playing such morally righteous characters as is evidenced by his performances as the Asgardian thunder god Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the dutiful mercenary Tyler Rake in the Extraction franchise.
