13 Characters & Events To Know Before Dial of Destiny

Ready your fedoras and bullwhips, Indiana Jones fans! Harrison Ford is set to star in the upcoming movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, directed by James Mangold. Joining him in this adventure are Antonio Banderas, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Mads Mikkelsen. In this fifth installment of the franchise, Indy sets out on a quest to find the fabled Dial of Destiny, accompanied by both old and new allies. However, they must race against Mikkelsen’s character, Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi scientist who hopes to use the Dial to manipulate time in his favor.

Indiana Jones first hit the big screen in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark, making a lasting impression on pop culture and launching Ford to superstardom. This was followed by three more successful sequels, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It’s been a long journey leading up to Indy’s next adventure, so let’s take a look back at some of the franchise’s highlights.

In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, we get a glimpse of a teenage Indy, where he acquires his signature fedora and bullwhip while searching for the Cross of Coronado. In this same movie, we also learn about Indy’s fear of snakes, which he acquired after tumbling into a car full of them while trying to retrieve the Cross.

Before becoming a professor of archeology, Indy was a decorated war hero in WWII, as revealed in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He fought valiantly as a spy and was often approached by museum curator Marcus Brody to track down some of the most sought-after artifacts in the world.

Indy has had many sidekicks throughout the franchise, but one of the most memorable was Short Round, who accompanied Indy to India in search of the Sankara stones in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Short Round not only provided Indy with his expertise and wit but also helped him escape the Thuggee cult.

In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indy searches for the Ark of the Covenant, a religious artifact believed to house the pieces of the Ten Commandments. In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, he searches for the Holy Grail, while Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has him searching for the Crystal Skull of Akator, which has telepathic powers.

Finally, Indy has been fighting Nazis for over four decades, and they continue to be the primary villains in the franchise. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is no exception, as Indy battles against Voller, a former Nazi scientist who has now joined NASA.

Get ready for another thrilling adventure with Indiana Jones and his allies as they set out to find the Dial of Destiny in this highly anticipated fifth installment of the franchise.

3 Indiana Jones’ Father Died After The Last Crusade

Indiana Jones and Henry Jones Sr. tied to a chair together in in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Indiana Jones had a tempestuous relationship with his father who, while a great mentor and educator during Indy’s childhood, was more of an absentee father. Henry Jones Sr. was a serious-minded and religious man who didn’t approve of his son’s reckless need for adventure, though he began to see the appeal of it when he joined him in pursuit of the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Sadly, he passed away sometime after that despite drinking from the Cup of Christ, and his presence is sorely missed by Indy fans.

2 Marcus Brody Died After The Last Crusade

One of Indy’s oldest friends and mentors Marcus Brody joined Henry Jones Sr. in passing away after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusadebut a fine statue of him was erected in front of Marshall College. Though he was often a source of comic relief on Indy’s adventures thanks to his British fastidiousness, Indy wouldn’t have been able to see half the sights (and sites) he did without Marcus’s influence and commitment to funding. Fortunately, he made sure that Indy was taken care of before he went on the ultimate adventure himself.

1 Indiana Jones Hasn’t Seen Sallah Since The Last Crusade

Sallah smiles in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

A friendly face fans are looking forward to seeing will be Sallah’s, who hasn’t been part of Indy’s adventures since his last appearance in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. One of Egypt’s most famous diggers and a loyal friend to Indy, he punched Nazis, shot treasure hunters, and made sure Indy didn’t accidentally poison himself. Including his character, who’s been there since the beginning of the franchise, is one of the many reasons why Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is going to feel like its natural and fitting conclusion.
