Florida Man’s Real Identity in the Marvel Universe is Absolutely Perfect

This eternal trickster and current God of Stories has taken on many forms throughout his long life, using various aliases and honorifics. However, his new role as the Florida Man proves both perfect and unexpected.
The grand reveal of Loki’s new identity occurred in the opening pages of Loki #1, a comic book written by Dan Watters, illustrated by Germán Peralta, and colored by Mike Spicer. Concerned that Loki might still be uneasy in his new role as king of the frost giants of Jotunheim, Thor decides to check up on his brother. He is annoyed, but not surprised, to find Loki relaxing in a beach-side café with a tropical drink instead of holding court from his throne in Jotunheim. Naturally, Loki has a perfect explanation for his apparent dereliction of duty.
According to Loki, the entire state of Florida is one of his sacred spaces, and he belongs there as much as he does in Jotunheim. To further drive this point home, Loki offers Thor the newspaper he has been reading, noting with pride that “they’ve always written all these wonderful stories about me here.” The paper contains a story with the headline: “Florida man attempts to trade alligator for…” Thor immediately makes the connection, realizing that Loki is admitting to being responsible for every story that inspired the “Florida Man” meme.
The “Florida Man” meme was first popularized in 2013, based on a number of wacky news headlines involving illogical or foolish actions performed by men in the state of Florida. This gave rise to the mocking image of a mythical folk hero, Florida Man, who is responsible for every single one of these unlikely stories.
