‘I will never do it again’

Charlize Theron has expressed her disinterest in altering her body for film roles. The 48-year-old Oscar winner revealed that her body has experienced long-lasting effects from the fluctuations in her weight throughout the years when she would transform her physique to fit certain onscreen characters. Theron stated, “I will never, ever do a movie again and say, ‘Yeah, I’ll gain 40 pounds.’ I will never do it again because you can’t take it off.” She recalled her experience during the making of the film “Monster” when she lost 30 pounds overnight by missing three meals and quickly returned to her normal weight. Theron received critical acclaim for her performance in “Monster” and even won an Academy Award for Best Actress. She previously claimed that she was able to effortlessly shed the weight she gained for the role, but now finds it nearly impossible to do so. After gaining 50 pounds for her 2018 film “Tully,” Theron expressed her struggle in returning to her previous weight. During her role in “Monster,” Theron revealed that she put on 30 pounds, which she managed to lose overnight. However, when she repeated the same process at the age of 43 for “Tully,” she faced difficulties in losing the weight and became concerned for her health. Theron shared, “I think I’m dying because I cannot lose this weight.” Her doctor attributed the challenge to her age, stating that her metabolism was not as efficient as it used to be. Theron confessed that she felt “depressed” while trying to transform into the character for “Tully” and resorted to consuming processed foods and excessive sugar, which affected her mood on set. She gained the weight to better understand the character’s emotions and mindset. Theron admitted that while the initial weeks of gaining weight were enjoyable, it soon became a burden. She described having to set alarms in the middle of the night to maintain her weight and even resorted to eating cold macaroni and cheese in the early hours. Theron concluded that it was challenging to sustain that weight.

Charlize Theron is no longer interested in transforming her body for film roles.

The Oscar winner, 48, said her body is still feeling lasting effects from her fluctuating weight over the years when she would alter her physique for certain onscreen roles.

“I will never, ever do a movie again and say, ‘Yeah, I’ll gain 40 pounds.’ I will never do it again because you can’t take it off,” Theron told Allure. “When I was 27, I did Monster, I lost 30 pounds, like, overnight. I missed three meals, and I was back to my normal weight.”

Theron picked up an Academy Award for best actress in the hit 2003 film “Monster,” in which she starred opposite Christina Ricci.

Theron previously said she was able to easily shed the weight she put on for the film, but said it’s now nearly impossible to do so.

“Then I did it at 43 for ‘Tully,’ and I remember a year into trying to lose the weight, I called my doctor and I said, ‘I think I’m dying because I cannot lose this weight.’ And he was like, ‘You’re over 40. Calm down. Your metabolism is not what it was.’ Nobody wants to hear that,” she shared.

Speaking in 2018, Theron said she became “depressed” while trying to transform into the character.

“I gained close to 50 pounds for this film,” she told ET at the time. “I wanted to feel what this woman felt, and I think that was a way for me to get closer to her and get into that mindset.”

“You know, it was a huge surprise to me. I got hit in the face pretty hard with depression. Yeah, for the first time in my life I was eating so much processed foods and I drank way too much sugar. I was not that fun to be around on this film,” she explained.

Theron said that while the “first three weeks are always fun,” putting on excess weight after week three is “not fun anymore.”

“Like, all of a sudden you’re just done eating that amount and then it becomes a job,” she said. “I remember having to set my alarm in the middle of the night in order to just maintain [the weight]. I would literally wake up at two in the morning and I’d have a cup of cold macaroni and cheese just next to me.”

“I would wake up and I would just eat it… I would just, like, shove it in my throat. It’s hard to maintain that weight,” she added.
