Is It Happening? Everything We Know About The Potential Pixar Sequel

Pixar’s latest animated film, Elemental, features a unique concept set in a city where residents of air, fire, water, and earth live segregated lives. The movie explores the theme of identity as two elements, Ember and Wade, fall in love despite being unable to touch each other. While Pixar’s previous films, such as Inside Out and Soul, have been highly successful, Elemental has received mixed reviews and had a lackluster opening weekend, making a sequel uncertain.

While there is no concrete news about Elemental 2, the film’s writers had an early idea for a sequel that involved Ember and Wade having a baby that was steam. However, the sequel has not been confirmed, and Pixar’s track record suggests that only a few of their original films receive sequels or prequels. To greenlight Elemental 2, the movie would have to surpass the expectations set by previous Pixar films and be a box office hit while earning critical acclaim for its emotional and technical aspects.

As of now, Elemental’s critical reception has improved since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, but it still falls short of Pixar’s gold standard. The movie’s box office numbers have been disappointing, with the lowest opening weekend for a Pixar film in three decades. While sequels typically take a decade or more to be released, Pixar would need at least a year to gauge Elemental’s box office performance and demand for a sequel, with Elemental 2’s release date likely to be in 2028 at the earliest.

While the voice actors for Elemental are not officially tied to a sequel, Pixar could choose to follow Ember and Wade in a sequel or explore different element stories with new voice actors. If a sequel is developed, it could continue the themes of acceptance and making one’s own choices without recycling the original plot, potentially following Ember and Wade as they face new challenges in a different location built for different kinds of elements.

In conclusion, while Elemental has a unique concept, it remains to be seen whether it will receive a sequel treatment with Elemental 2. Pixar’s track record suggests that only a few of its original films receive sequels or prequels, and Elemental would have to surpass the expectations set by previous Pixar films to be greenlit for a sequel.

Elemental is Pixar’s newest animated movie with a unique concept, but will it be enough to receive the sequel treatment with Elemental 2? Pixar’s Elemental was released on June 16 with very high expectations. The movie takes place in a city where air, fire, water, and earth residents reside but do not interact. When a fire element named Ember (voiced by Leah Lewis) meets a water element named Wade (Mamoudou Athie), the two fall in love even though they cannot touch each other. This forces them to reexamine their elemental identities and how their city’s different neighborhoods are separated.

On paper, because of Pixar’s previous success at the box office and the studio’s reputation for producing emotionally compelling films, Elemental should be another hit. Pixar releases like Inside Out and Soul have explored human nature by giving personalities to emotions and souls instead of focusing on human characters, and they were huge successes. Given that Elemental personifies the four major elements, it seems poised to follow a similar playbook, with Pixar’s tried-and-true formula applied to the film’s concept. However, the first reviews for Elemental were mixed, and it had a less-than-stellar opening weekend, making Elemental 2 less of a certainty.

While there hasn’t been any concrete news around Elemental 2 yetElemental writers John Hoberg and Kat Likkel actually had a very early idea for a sequel that would have been set up at the end of Elemental. The original plan to tease Elemental 2 was for Ember and Wade to have a baby, which would have been steam (via The Direct). Likkel explained, “There was going to be a little addendum at the end. Instead of them just leaving… you were going to see that they had been gone and we’re coming back to visit, and they’ve had a baby, and the baby was steam.” The writers seemed excited about the idea, as they also admitted that they were “fighting” for it to happen.

Elemental 2 Is Not Confirmed

So far, there is no official confirmation that Elemental 2 will ever be made. Only six of Pixar’s previous 18 original features — Toy Story, Cars, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incrediblesand Inside Out — have received a sequel or prequel. Of these six movies, four earned Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay. For Elemental 2 to be greenlit, Elemental would have to meet or surpass the expectations set by Pixar films that were followed by a sequel or prequel. To do so, Elemental will have to be a huge box office draw, earn critical acclaim, and have its story praised from both an emotional and technical standpoint.

While the movie’s critical reception has improved since its initial premiere at Cannes Film Festival, as it now has a very respectable 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s still far from the gold standard that audiences have come to expect from Pixar. Between that and a lack of word of mouth, Elemental will likely bomb at the box office, especially as the movie has the lowest Pixar box-office opening in three decades. The movie debuted at $11.8 million on Friday and made less than $35 million on its opening weekend. Though Elemental faced major competition with The Flash and Asteroid Citywhen it comes to the possibility of Elemental 2those numbers aren’t promising.

Elemental 2 Release Date Info

With Elemental 2 not confirmed, a release date is difficult to pin down. It is common for Pixar sequels to take close to or over a decade to be released. The studio needs time to not only animate the movie but also to develop a story that matches the caliber of the first film. Pixar would need at least a year to gauge the box office performance of Elemental and if there is demand for a sequel. If so, Elemental 2 would take a minimum of four years to make, which would put its earliest release date sometime in 2028.

Elemental 2 Cast

Since Elemental 2 has not been confirmed, the Elemental voice actors are not officially tied to a sequel. While most actors reprise their roles in Pixar sequels, the studio has occasionally recast actors for creative reasons. In the 2022 spinoff film Lightyear, Toy Story actor Tim Allen did not voice Buzz Lightyear because Chris Evans was cast instead. Also, Huckleberry Milner replaced Spencer Fox as Dash in The Incredibles 2 after Fox aged out of the role (via Insider). Given that Elemental takes place in an entire city, Pixar could choose to follow Ember and Wade in a sequel or hire new voice actors to explore different elements’ stories.

Elemental 2 Story Details

Though Elemental 2 is not confirmed, the first movie does set up a sequel, or it at least leaves open the doors for a follow-up to be developed if Elemental is successful. The end of Elemental sees Wade and Ember leaving Element City for a new location after Ember accepts an internship with a glass designer. Though it isn’t clear where the internship is, Ember explains that it’s far away and will run for several months. Elemental 2 can pick up exactly where Elemental left off, as the sequel can follow Ember and Wade as they face new challenges in a different location that’s built for different kinds of elements, such as Land and Air people.

Oftentimes with Pixar sequels, the studio will tell a story with similar themes and messages as the original but with characters or settings flipped. If a sequel is ever confirmed, it would make sense for Elemental 2 to focus on Wade and Ember leaving Element City for another location but still continue the themes of acceptance and making your own choices found in Elemental without recycling the original plot.
