Like a Dragon’s Kiryu Has a New English Voice Actor and Fans Are Split
It has been confirmed that there will be a new English dub voice actor for long-time protagonist Kazuma Kiryu in the upcoming Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name spin-off. This new addition to the Yakuza series will fill in the gaps between Yakuza 6: The Song of Life and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, following the story of a retired Kiryu who has taken up the role of secret agent in service of the Daidoji Faction under the codename Joryu.
The developers of the game, RGG Studio, have revealed the characters and actors of Like a Dragon Gaiden, apart from Kiryu who will be a part of the adventure. The game features new characters such as Shishido Kosei and Tsuruno Yuki, members of the Omi Alliance family, and a mysterious woman named Akame who Kiryu is tasked with protecting. Homare Nishitani, the third member of the family to carry the name of the eccentric Yakuza 0 villain, will also make an appearance. While the full English dub cast has not yet been revealed, the news of Kiryu’s new voice actor has caused some mixed reactions among fans.
Yong Yea, a popular gaming news coverage YouTuber, has been confirmed as the new voice actor for Kiryu, succeeding Darryl Kurylo who first played the role in the original Yakuza game. However, Yea has previously done a number of roles in anime and video games, such as Sword Art Online, Cookie Run and The Prince of Tennis. Anime fans might know him best as Father Enrico Pucci from JoJo\’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, which some argue was his star-making role. Despite the backlash, many believe Yea deserves the role as Kiryu, which he himself has thanked fans for.
