Which Fighters Are Joining Mortal Kombat 2’s Character Roster?
First teased in Mortal Kombat‘s ending as Young arrives in Los Angeles to find him, Johnny Cage was one of the original fighters brought into the first tournament to face the forces of Outworld in the game series. While Cage was tricked into fighting under the assumption that he could prove his martial arts skills were genuine, the actor would repeatedly fight for Earthrealm, with the character’s story in NetherRealm’s rebooted continuity seeing Johnny become a member of Special Forces. With Cole searching out Johnny in the previous movie’s ending, Mortal Kombat 2 may see the beloved classic character could instead take on a mentor role in the film’s continuity.
Alongside Johnny, Mortal Kombat 2 will see several new fighters from Outworld step up to participate in the tournament. Martyn Ford and Damon Herriman take on the roles of series villains Shao Khan and Quan Chi. Tati Gabrielle and Adeline Rudolph portray Jade and Kitana, respectively, assassins who serve Khan and two of the franchise’s most recognizable characters. Joe Taslim will also make a surprising return, despite Bi Han being killed by Cole and Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), as the former Sub Zero is resurrected as the undead specter Noob Saibot.
While Johnny was expected to appear in Mortal Kombat 2 following his ending tease in the 2021 movie, it seems that the actor-turned-fighter may play a larger role than expected due to the new logo. While not typically a mentor in his earlier appearances, the character taking on a teaching role to Cole may be an ideal way to pay respect to him being one of the series’ oldest characters. With Johnny potentially playing a critical role in the sequel, it will only be a matter of time before images show Urban’s take on Cage’s iconic shades.
