Mortal Kombat 2 Producer Announces Filming Start & Promises Sequel Fixes

Producer Todd Garner has announced the start of filming for Mortal Kombat 2 after finalizing the fighting roster. The upcoming video game adaptation franchise is expected to feature the fighters of Earthrealm participating in the eponymous fighting tournament to keep Shang Tsung and the forces of Outworld from invading. The plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film’s development was officially greenlit in January 2022, almost a year after the first movie’s successful theatrical run and record-setting HBO Max debut.

Garner took to Twitter to announce the filming start of Mortal Kombat 2 in Australia, just over two years after the first movie hit theaters. The producer also assured fans that the creatives behind the sequel have listened to feedback and are fixing much of the 2021 reboot’s mistakes.

The Paul W.S. Anderson-helmed adaptation of Mortal Kombat holds a cult following nearly 30 years after its release. However, the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot movie saw a much better response from fans of the source video game, largely for its R-rated approach to the bloody fighting at the heart of the story. Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada’s performances as Kano, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion, respectively, were hailed as pitch-perfect casting.

Despite the various points of praise, the 2021 Mortal Kombat encountered criticism largely for its script and storyline, with fans of the games disappointed at the lack of the actual tournament’s inclusion in the story. Writer Greg Russo, who is being replaced by Moon Knight creator Jeremy Slater for Mortal Kombat 2, previously indicated his plans for a trilogy in which the first movie would introduce the characters, the second would be the actual tournament, and the third would be set after the fact.

Audiences are keen to see improvements for Lewis Tan’s Cole Young, the sole original hero created for the first movie revealed to be Scorpion’s descendant. With both Slater and Garner assuring that they are listening to fan feedback, it seems likely that the character’s arc will see an improvement in the sequel. However, with the new group of characters being introduced, it’s also possible that Cole becomes less of a focus.

In conclusion, Mortal Kombat 2 is highly anticipated by fans of the video game adaptation franchise. With the creatives behind the sequel taking fan feedback into account, it is expected to be an improvement over the 2021 reboot. Mortal Kombat 2’s plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is expected to feature the fighting tournament to keep the forces of Outworld from invading.

The other major element audiences are keen to see fixed in Mortal Kombat 2 is Lewis Tan’s Cole Young, the sole original hero created for the first movie revealed to be Scorpion’s descendant. With both Slater and now Garner assuring listening to fan feedback, it seems likely the character, last seen heading off to recruit Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage to fight, will see an improvement in his arc, though with the new group of characters being introduced in the sequel, it’s also possible Cole becomes less of a focus.
