Next Superman Actor Could Be Announced Next Week, Superman: Legacy Enters Final Stages
Reports suggest that DC Studios and James Gunn are in the final stages of screen testing for the upcoming movie Superman: Legacy and are close to announcing their chosen actor for the role of Superman. As the DCEU ends, DC Studios under the leadership of Gunn and Peter Safran are planning to create a new shared universe across TV and film. Superman: Legacy is a retelling of the early days of the Man of Steel as a superhero. The studio has been meeting with actors for the roles of Superman and Lois Lane in the past few weeks in preparation for filming next year.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Corenswet, Tom Brittney, and Nicholas Hoult have recently undergone screen tests as both Clark Kent and Superman. Corenswet was paired with Emma Mackey, Brittney with Phoebe Dynevor, and Hoult with Rachel Brosnahan. Mackey then tested with the other actors for the role of Lois for the Superman: Legacy auditions. Alexander and Bill Skarsgård are also being considered for the role of Lex Luthor, an iconic DC villain. The announcement for the chosen actors for Superman and Lois could be made as early as next week.

David Corenswet has been a favorite for the role of Superman since the announcement of Superman: Legacy. The fact that he has advanced this far in the screen testing process is a testament to DC Studios potentially listening to what their audience wants in the new Superman reboot. Nicholas Hoult is also being considered for the role, which is interesting given how close he was to playing Batman before Robert Pattinson was cast. Hoult may also be being considered for the role of Superman’s arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor.
It is unclear whether Emma Mackey is the final choice for the role of Lois Lane since only she has proceeded to the next stage of screen testing. The Skarsgård brothers are also being considered for the role of Lex Luthor. The potential SAG-AFTRA strike may be a factor in DC Studios’ urgency to finalize the casting before it happens. The studio had previously planned to reveal the casting at San Diego Comic-Con.
It appears the world may finally know soon who the next Superman is going to be, perhaps as early as next week. THR reveals that recent screen tests with David Corenswet, Tom Brittney, and Nicholas Hoult had them do scenes as both Clark Kent, but also as Superman. Corenswet tested with Emma Mackey, while Brittney was paired up with Phoebe Dynevor, followed by Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan. Per the trade, Mackey “segued into the second day” to test with the other actors as Lois for the Superman: Legacy auditions. In addition to that, there may be new candidates for Lex Luthor, as Alexander and Bill Skarsgård have been mentioned for the iconic DC villain. Supposedly, a decision could be coming this week for who will land the role of Superman as well as Lois.
Who The New Superman & Lois Lane Actors Could Be
When it comes to Superman, the name that has been highly favored in fan casting since Superman: Legacy was formally announced is David Corenswet. From countless fan-trailers and images depicting him as the Man of Tomorrow, the fact that he has advanced this far speaks volumes about DC Studios potentially paying attention to what audiences are wanting to see in their new Superman reboot. Hoult being up for the gig is also interesting, given how close he was to getting tapped for The Batman before the role went to Robert Pattinson.
The bigger mystery with Hoult, however, is whether or not he is only being considered for Superman or if he is potentially also being eyed for Superman villain Lex Luthor as casting details have revealed it will supposedly be a very different take on him. If the Skargårds are now on the shortlist, that may be a reveal in itself that Hoult is in serious contention for the Man of Steel. With Lois, it’s unclear if Mackey is the final frontrunner, given that she is the only one who has proceeded to the next phase of screen tests. If the reports are true, it won’t be much longer until Superman: Legacy reveals their new leading duo for Gunn’s DC Universe.
It begs the question of whether or not the potential SAG-AFTRA strike is playing a factor in Superman: Legacy trying to lock in their stars for at least Clark Kent and Lois Lane. Many had been predicting that DC Studios were getting casting ready to be unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con, but if the strike happen, that would explain why they are trying to finalize it this month already. For now, time will tell who will sign on for Superman: Legacy for Lois and Clark, as well as other characters that are currently being cast.
