Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2: News, Release, Updates

The cancellation of Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 by Paramount+ has caused a seismic shift in what we knew about the popular animated series. The show, created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, successfully introduced the Star Trek franchise to a new generation of younger viewers while also winning over long-time fans. Produced jointly by Paramount+ and Nickelodeon Studios, the first season of Star Trek: Prodigy comprised 20 episodes released in two 10-episode blocks in the fall of 2021 and 2022.

The first season of Star Trek: Prodigy presented an epic story about six alien children who found the USS Protostar and chose to embody the principles of Starfleet with the guidance of their mentor, Hologram Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). As the season progressed, Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) arrived in pursuit of the Protostar, seeking answers regarding its original Captain, Chakotay (Robert Beltran). Admiral Janeway and the Protostar’s youthful crew faced a sinister plot by Asencia (Jameela Jamil) and the Diviner (John Noble) to destroy Starfleet. But the story’s heart was the greater destiny of Dal (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), and their friends and whether Starfleet would accept them into their ranks.

On June 23, 2023, Paramount+ announced that Star Trek: Prodigy was one of four series canceled by the streaming service. Furthermore, Paramount+ is removing Star Trek: Prodigy from the platform entirely. This move comes as a result of Paramount+’s merger with Showtime into one streaming service, Paramount+ with Showtime, at the end of June. Prodigy’s cancellation also reflects the changes in the streaming industry as other services like Max, Disney+, Netflix, and Hulu are purging content for tax write-offs and cost-cutting measures.

The executive producers of Star Trek: Prodigy confirmed the news on Twitter that the show’s second season, announced in 2022 for a late 2023 release, will complete post-production. CBS Studios plans to shop Star Trek: Prodigy to other services that will stream both seasons 1 and 2. However, Prodigy is now finished at Paramount+, and although the animated series is a joint production of CBS Studios/Paramount and Nickelodeon, Prodigy season 2 will not air on Nickelodeon like season 1.

Whether Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 will be released depends entirely on whether CBS Studios can find a new streaming home for the animated series. Prodigy’s cancellation at Paramount+ effectively means that season 2 is also the final season. If Prodigy does get picked up, the new streaming service could finance the production of Star Trek: Prodigy season 3. With so much uncertainty and Paramount+’s previous fall 2023 release date no longer viable, it’s unclear when fans will see Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, even after its completion.

If Prodigy finds a new home, it will become the first Star Trek series not to stream on Paramount+ since the franchise’s resurrection in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery, which was also canceled by Paramount+ in March 2023. The entire voice cast led by Kate Mulgrew, Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, and including Jason Mantzoukas, Dee Bradley Baker, Rylee Alazraqui, and Angus Imrie will return for Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, and Jameela Jamil and Jimmi Simpson may reprise villains Asencia and Deadnok as well.

In conclusion, Star Trek: Prodigy season 2’s cancellation by Paramount+ has thrown everything we knew about the show into chaos. However, there is still hope that the series will find a new streaming home and continue its legacy of introducing young audiences to the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 told a sweeping story about six alien kids who found the USS Protostar and chose to embody the principles of Starfleet with the help of their mentor, Hologram Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). As Prodigy season 1 progressed, Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) arrived in pursuit of the Protostar, and to find out what happened to its original Captain, Chakotay (Robert Beltran). But just as important is the greater destiny of Dal (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), and their friends, and if Starfleet would accept them into their ranks.
