Taylor Swift shades Kanye West’s 2009 VMAs interruption on Eras Tour
There is still lingering animosity between Taylor Swift and Kanye West. During her Eras Tour performance in Mexico on Sunday, Swift took a dig at West for his infamous interruption of her 2009 VMAs acceptance speech. In a video circulating on social media, the 33-year-old singer playfully shaded the rapper during her “Evermore” set at Mexico City’s Foro Sol stadium. When the audience drowned her out and she had to pause, Swift told the crowd, “It’s the best way to be interrupted, by the way, just people chanting your name.” She added, “It’s really the only way to be interrupted. And I would know.” This cheeky comment appeared to reference West’s interruption of her speech over a decade ago when she won the Best Female Video trophy for “You Belong With Me.” At the time, West snatched the mic from her hands and declared that Beyoncé should have won. Despite Beyoncé asking Swift back on stage to “have her moment” later that evening and West claiming to have apologized, their feud resurfaced in 2016 with the release of West’s song “Famous” that included derogatory lyrics about Swift. While Swift denied giving permission for the lyrics and felt isolated by the backlash, Kardashian released video evidence of their conversation, seemingly debunking Swift’s allegation. Swift responded by releasing a diss track titled “This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things.” Despite the drama, Swift has managed to move on and find humor in the situation, as seen during her Eras Tour performances.

Taylor Swift took a swipe at Kanye West for his notorious interruption of her 2009 VMAs acceptance speech during her Eras Tour performance in Mexico on Sunday.
In footage circulating on social media Monday, the 33-year-old “Cruel Summer” singer seemingly shaded the rapper, 46, during the “Evermore” set of her fourth show at Mexico City’s Foro Sol stadium.
“It’s the best way to be interrupted, by the way, just people chanting your name,” Swift told the crowd when she had to stop talking after the audience drowned her out.
“It’s really the only way to be interrupted,” the songwriter added. “And I would know.”
Swift giggled before continuing to give an emotional speech about the tour.
Her cheeky comment appeared to reference West chiming in when she took the stage to accept the Best Female Video trophy for “You Belong With Me” over a decade ago.
As Swift gushed in 2009 that it was always a “dream” of hers to win, West snatched the mic from her hands to declare that Beyoncé should have won the award instead.
“Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish. But Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!” West said at the time of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” which had also been nominated.
After calling Queen B’s video “one of the best … of all time,” he handed the mic back to a shocked-looking Swift.
The crowd cheered for Beyoncé, who reacted by mouthing “Oh, Kanye” from her seat.
Later that evening, Beyoncé asked Swift back on stage to “have her moment.”
Although West later claimed to have called Swift to apologize and buried the hatchet, they rekindled their feud in 2016.
At the time, the Yeezy designer dropped “Famous,” in which he rapped, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous.”
While Swift asserted that she never gave West permission to rap the lyrics, his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, seemingly debunked her allegation by releasing video proof of their conversation.
The “Shake It Off” artist faced backlash over the feud, which she told Vogue in 2019 left her feeling “very isolat[ed].”

She explained, “When you say someone is canceled, it’s not a TV show. It’s a human being. You’re sending mass amounts of messaging to this person to either shut up, disappear, or it could also be perceived as, ‘Kill yourself.’”
Swift “survived” the scandal by making music about it, starting with her diss track “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things.”
The release helped “preserve [her] mental health and also tell the story of what it’s like to go through something so humiliating,” the Grammy winner told the outlet.
Fortunately, the “Miss Americana” star seems to move on from the drama as she couldn’t hold back her laughter while performing the song during one of her Eras Tour stops in July.
