The inaugural film of DCU, Blue Beetle, is set to face the opposite problem to the first film of the previous DCEU, Man of Steel. Starring Henry Cavill as Superman, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel was the first movie to launch DC’s shared movie universe, which has been running since 2013. However, a new DCU is on the horizon, and it comes with its unique set of challenges.
Releasing in August, Blue Beetle will star Xolo Marijuana as the titular hero, Jaime Reyes, in a coming-of-age story that involves him accepting his heroic destiny after acquiring a high-tech alien armor that chose him as its host. Although its development preceded new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, Gunn has confirmed that Blue Beetle will be considered the first movie in the new DCU, the official soft reboot of the DCEU. However, Blue Beetle is about to face the opposite challenge to Man of Steel.

Essentially, Blue Beetle is a risk as the first official DCU movie. After all, its success (or lack thereof) will more than likely set the tone and first impressions for the rest of the DC franchise going forward. This will be rather interesting considering the fact that Jaime Reyes’ Blue Beetle is a lesser-known character compared to other DC heroes such as Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman. While Blue Beetle has some great stories in the original DC Comics and is a great character, he’s not as big of an inherent draw ahead of the film’s release as Superman is.

Everyone knows who Superman is, existing as one of the biggest and most well-known superheroes of all time, a major icon of American pop culture. This became a problem in its own right as audiences were soon divided over whether this depiction of Superman was “accurate” enough, especially after Cavill’s Man of Steel kills General Zod (Michael Shannon) at the end of his first movie. While multitudes of fans eventually came to love Cavill’s Superman, preexisting notions were certainly his biggest hurdle before and after his first film.
Why Blue Beetle’s DCU Challenges Could Actually Help The Movie
It is worth noting that while Blue Beetle might not have the inherent draw that Man of Steel did for the DCEU, it may work in the character’s favor (and by extension the new DCU as a whole). Audiences who do see the upcoming DC movie will be going in with less of a preconceived idea of what the movie should look like compared to Cavill’s first Superman movie. As such, they’ll hopefully be more open-minded to the possibilities of the character and the universe at large beyond Blue Beetle alone.
