VFX Artists Find Sole Saving Grace Of Worst Alan Moore Comic Book Movie

Despite receiving criticism from reviewers and being disowned by its original comic creator, Alan Moore, VFX artists have praised the use of practical effects in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The film is loosely based on Moore’s comic book series of the same name and follows a group of famous 19th-century literary characters reimagined as a team of Victorian-era superheroes. The cast is led by Sean Connery as adventurer Allan Quartermain, who claimed that the film’s troubled production and final quality convinced him to retire from acting altogether.

During a recent episode of Corridor Crew‘s “VFX Artists React” series, the trio of VFX artists praised the use of intricately detailed 1/5 scale miniatures to create the sequence in which Stuart Townsend’s Dorian Gray races through the collapsing streets of Venice. They applauded the final composite’s realism and suggested that the practical nature of the effects used would have been a great deal of fun for the crew to produce. Sean Connery in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Despite opening against the box office juggernaut Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen managed to gross over $179 million at the worldwide box office during its 2003 theatrical run. Although it was commercially successful, it was heavily criticized for its poor execution and failure to live up to the widespread acclaim of Moore’s original comics. Much of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen‘s ongoing legacy is related to the behind-the-scenes tensions between Connery and director Stephen Norrington.

Originally intended to jumpstart its own continuing franchise, all hopes for a sequel were quashed quickly after The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen‘s debut. However, in 2015, it was reported that 20th Century Fox was developing a reboot, which was intended to be female-led and more in keeping with the original comics’ focus on the Dracula character Mina Murray. Although these plans were later abandoned following the Disney/Fox merger, it was revealed in May 2022 that the project was being revived with Red Sparrow screenwriter Justin Haythe for the Hulu streaming service.

While it is reported that Haythe’s new script will adhere more closely to Moore’s original comics, it is unclear whether the latest League of Extraordinary Gentlemen reboot will be able to overcome distaste for the 2003 adaptation. Moore himself has yet to comment on the reboot, but the author is famous for being less than impressed with Hollywood’s adaptations of his works, so he would likely be just as cynical about this latest interpretation. With a lot of history to overcome, the new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen reboot has its work cut out for it when it finally arrives.
