Honey, I Shrunk the Kids‘ planned sequel, Shrunk, has received an unfortunate update from one of the film’s stars, Josh Gad. The original comedy film, released in 1989, featured Rick Moranis as inventor Wayne Szalinski, who accidentally shrinks the neighborhood kids with his shrink ray while they attempt to retrieve a baseball from his house.
The movie is considered a classic family comedy, with a sequel, Shrunk, announced for Disney+ in 2019.
Honey I Shrunk The Kids Legacy Sequel With Rick Moranis Gets Grim Update From Star
However, Josh Gad has posted a disappointing update about the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel, stating that it is not currently in production. According to Gad, Shrunk has been delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, scheduling conflicts, and budget issues. Nevertheless, he remains hopeful that the film will eventually arrive on Disney+.
Is Disney Still Planning To Produce Shrunk?
Given the multiple delays Shrunk has faced, it is natural to wonder if Disney will ever produce and release the planned sequel. The original director of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Joe Johnston, would return to direct the new installment. While Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was Johnston’s directorial debut, he has gone on to direct other successful films such as Jumanji, Jurassic Park III, and Captain America: The First Avenger. Shrunk would showcase Johnston’s growth since his first film.
If produced, Shrunk would also see Moranis return to acting in film. Although Moranis starred in two sequels to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids titled Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, his final movie role was as Rutt the Canadian moose in 2006’s Brother Bear 2. Nevertheless, Moranis is set to reprise his role as Wayne in Shrunk.
Considering the enduring popularity of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids as a beloved family comedy, it seems reasonable for Disney to continue production on Shrunk in the future. However, with so many delays over the years, there is no way of telling when Johnston, Moranis, and Gad’s new addition to the franchise will be produced, or if it will be produced at all. Despite being announced years ago, it appears that Shrunk may not be coming to Disney+ after all.
