Release Date, Cast, Plot Details & Everything We Know
Pixar’s Inside Out was a groundbreaking success when it was released in 2015 as the studio’s 15th feature film. The movie tells the story of an adolescent girl named Riley, and her anthropomorphized emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. The film presents a nuanced take on emotions and mental health, portraying Joy as both the protagonist and antagonist on her journey to understand the importance of acknowledging and processing all emotions.
With the announcement of a sequel, Inside Out 2, fans have been eagerly anticipating updates on the film’s release date, cast, and plot. The film is set to continue the story of Riley and her emotional team, exploring her teenage years and introducing new emotions. Pixar CCO Pete Docter has revealed that there could be up to 27 emotions in the sequel, reflecting the complexity of growing up.
The original cast of Amy Poehler as Joy, Lewis Black as Anger, and Phyllis Smith as Sadness will return, but Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling will not be reprising their roles. The film’s release date has been set for June 14, 2024, making it Pixar’s 29th film to date.
Pixar has a reputation for pushing the boundaries of animation, and Inside Out 2 is no exception. Docter has promised to create something unexpected while staying true to the familiarity of the original. The film’s plot will likely continue to explore the concept of multiple control centers, highlighting the unique emotional experiences of different individuals.
While fans eagerly await the release of Inside Out 2, they can look forward to other upcoming Pixar films, including Elemental and Elio. Pixar continues to deliver heartwarming and thought-provoking stories that resonate with audiences of all ages.
Inside Out 2 updates have been rolling in since Pixar announced a tentative release date as well as some early cast and plot details. Pixar’s Inside Out was released on June 19, 2015, as their 15th feature film and their first after an uncharacteristically long drought of two years between films. The movie is told through the anthropomorphized emotions of an adolescent girl named Riley (Kaitlyn Dias). Her emotions each have their own personalities but work together to ensure Riley is a well-rounded kid. Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), and Joy (Amy Poehler) personify Riley’s emotional state and guide her as she grows up.
The plot of Inside Out bucks the usual Pixar formula and presents a film without a villain. Joy is both the protagonist and her own enemy as she goes on a journey to understand that suppressing “bad” emotions is unhealthy. It’s a nuanced take on healthy feelings and the animation and voice acting paint an accurate picture of what maturing can feel like. Inside Out was universally praised with a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it earned a Best Original Screenplay nomination and Best Animated Film win at the 88th Academy Awards. Expectations are high for the sequel and information is still forthcoming but here’s what’s been revealed so far.
Inside Out 2 Latest News
The most recent Inside Out 2 updates come from Pixar CCO Pete Docter, the man who directed the original Inside Out as well as Monsters, Inc, and Soul. He was speaking about the Pixar movie, Elementalwhich is an original story that took the studio’s animation releases back to theaters after the last few major releases were sent straight to Disney+. When talking about recent Pixar movies, Docter said that fans have made it clear they want comfort food and something familiar when they go to the movies (via Variety). That is where Inside Out 2 feeds that need.
“We have our share of sequels in the works. We’re doing a sequel to “Inside Out,” so you get to go back inside the mind of Joy and Sadness. We have another “Toy Story,” so Woody and Buzz are back. And we have a few other projects, but it’s always a balance.”
Docter also said that he wanted to bring back Inside Out 2 but create something unexpected to go along with the familiarity of the original. He said that is the plan for Pixar in the future as well, as they want to push the limits of what they can do in the world of animation.
“We want to push the limits as far as we can.” It looks like Pixar, but in a new flavor that we haven’t experienced before… As for “Inside Out,” a bunch more emotions get to come in. It’s not just the five we saw in the first film. The team on that one put together a really great story that I think also has real depth and meaning to it. So fingers crossed that people like it.”
There have also been Inside Out 2 updates that Pixar is working on a TV show. While this might have made some fans think the movie was no longer coming, this is actually in addition to the new movie. However, there are no plot details and the news was only in regard to the fact that Pixar seems to be failing to make a dent at the box office. What is known is that it is “based on Inside Out” with Soul co-writer Mike Jones taking the lead.
Inside Out 2 Is Confirmed
Disney’s D23 Expo 2022, their official fan club convention, took place from September 9-11 in Anaheim, California, and it was there that Disney execs confirmed a number of films, including Inside Out 2.
Inside Out 2 Release Date
At Disney’s D23 Expo 2022, the Disney execs also announced a number of release dates for films including Inside Out 2. Inside Out 2 was given a release date of June 14, 2024almost exactly nine years after the original. Before that, Pixar and Disney will release Elemental (June 16, 2023) and Elio (March 1, 2024). Inside Out 2 will be the 29th Pixar film at the time of release assuming all schedules remain unchanged.
Inside Out 2 Cast
As the lead emotion Joy, Poehler will definitely be returning for Inside Out 2. In fact, she took to the stage alongside Docter at D23 for the sequel’s announcement. Other actors confirmed to return are Black (Anger) and Diane Lane as Riley’s mom (via Movieweb). Smith (Sadness) is the fourth actor listed on Inside Out 2‘s IMDb page.
Each of the emotions in Inside Out are voiced by notable Hollywood talents and since 2015, some of those actors’ stars have risen further. Kaling (Disgust) and Hader (Fear) were supporting characters of the first film but important aspects of the overall story. Due to a contract dispute that saw the pair paid much less than lead Poehler, neither will be returning for Inside Out 2. With two of the five emotions not being voiced by the original actors, the creative team will need to decide whether to replace the voices or the characters altogether.
Inside Out 2 Story Details
Along with the Inside Out 2 released date information, the D23 Expo teased story details for the sequel to the hit animated film. The sequel will still revolve around Riley and her emotional team, but this film will explore Riley as a teenager and will include some new emotions. If the mind of an adolescent was confusing enough, the emotions inside a teenager are going to be even more entertaining to watch. It’s a natural progression for the story and should allow for more voice actors and characters to take center stage along with Joy, Sadness, and the others.
Pixar CCO Pete Docter revealed that there will be up to possibly 27 emotions in the upcoming sequel to Inside Out. This would be a huge increase in characters from the five in Inside Out but as a teenager, Riley will have much more complex emotions compared to her younger years. 27 emotions are necessary to tell the story of someone growing up in the simplicity of childhood.
Inside Out 2 Trailer Info
There has yet to be a trailer released for Inside Out 2 but there likely could be one by the end of the year. Pixar also typically drops trailers for upcoming movies with their latest releases so a follow-up trailer could come when their next film, Elio, hits theaters
How Inside Out 2 Will Connect To Inside Out
Inside Out follows Riley and her emotions through her young life, and Inside Out 2 will continue that story as she grows. Unlike Toy Story 3, Inside Out 2 will not skip Riley’s teen years like the former did Andy’s when it jumped right to his college years. In fact, most Pixar films tend to avoid the demographic that Inside Out 2 will be zeroing in on. Except for a few exceptions most of the company’s movies observe children and young adults and up, with a few notable exceptions, such as Onward. The series may end up feeling like one long film depending on how short the time jump is.
At the end of the movie, viewers are treated to what the emotions of different people and even animals look like. This ending of Inside Out suggests how the two films may connect as well and how Inside Out 2 could even go beyond Riley. Different minds have different variations of the five emotions, so there’s the chance that Inside Out 2 explores more than just Riley’s mind. None of the emotional hubs have recognized that there are other control centers, so Inside Out 2 may see Riley’s emotions understanding there are others in the heads of her friends to connect the movies.
